Your face is one of the first things people notice and see. And your skin plays a huge role in making your face look the best it can be. Therefore, it’s important for you to keep your skin looking healthy, smooth and wrinkle-free.

Food and Diet

First of all, one of the best ways to keep your skin looking healthy is by eating healthy foods along with your diet. Moreover, eating healthy foods means eating foods that are low in fats and carbohydrates. Also, eat foods rich with antioxidants. For example, foods like salmon, beans, sweet potatoes, dark green veggies, nuts, blueberries, and purple or red grapes are all rich with antioxidants. Also, these foods seem to help protect your skin.

In addition, some studies show that complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and healthy proteins also help protect against breakouts. Moreover, don’t forget to eat foods rich in vitamins C or E, and selenium. In fact, these foods help protect your skin from sun damage, along with signs of aging, skin discoloration and wrinkles.

Exercise

Next, because exercise improves blood circulation, your skin gets nourished. In fact, increased circulation brings more oxygen and nutrients, which may help your skin produce collagen for fending off wrinkles.

Sleep

And don’t forget to sleep the recommended seven to eight hours every night. In fact, good sleep helps your body and skin, as well as fending off dark circles under your eyes, pale skin, and puffy eyes. Also, remember that when you sleep on your stomach, the bags under your eyes become worse.  As a consequence, sleep either on your sides or on your back. And if you do sleep on your side, remember to switch from one side to the other. Because, if you constantly sleep on one side, you may get wrinkles where your face constantly presses against the pillow.

Sun

Regrettably, the sun is responsible for 90 percent of your skin damage.  Also, the more time you spend in the sun, the higher your risks of getting skin cancer. So protect your skin by wearing sunblock. And look for sunblock containing titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone. In addition, make sure your sunblock has an SPF of 30 or more. And if you do have to go in the sun, wear wide-brimmed hats along with long sleeved tops. Most of all, avoid the sun between 10 AM in the morning to 2 PM in the afternoon, when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Age

Regrettably, your skin changes as you get older. In fact, your skin produces less collagen. Also, the elastin, in the skin, gets weaker. As a result, your skin doesn’t spring back as quickly as it used to. In addition, as you get older, neither do you lose nor create skin cells as quickly as you used to. Therefore, use a nondrying soap to moisturize often and remove dead skin. You can also use retinoids to reduce fine wrinkles.

Caffeine and Alcohol

Next, because dehydrating caffeine causes your skin to dry out, you may want to cut back on coffee. Also, don’t forget the caffeinated tea. In addition, alcohol, being a diuretic, causes the body to lose water. As a result, your skin becomes drier and your blood vessels dilate. Regrettably, drinking alcohol over long periods of time permanently damages your blood vessels. Consequently, your skin turns and stays red. Strangely enough, red wine can trigger flare-ups of rosacea.

Skin Care

So, to keep your skin healthy, cleanse your face with gentle soap. Or to remove dead cells, you can exfoliate nightly with gentle scrubs and toners. Then apply a retinoid cream and moisturizer.

Next, because the low air humidity in airplanes dries out your skin, moisturize before, during, and after your flight. Also, if you have to travel by air, avoid wearing makeup.

Finally, winters can result in flaky skin, making your eczema and rosacea worse. And the dry heat in the house is not much help. So drink lots of water and apply moisturizer throughout the day.
